the magic is relentless
A 40 page, digitally printed zine, featuring photography and poems by Steven Hill.
These poems were written in the year following my dad's cancer diagnosis. My dad lived in Dunedin, New Zealand, 3000+ miles from my home in Glasgow, Scotland. I visited there twice, almost exactly two years apart. The second time, we knew would be the last time we spent together.
He was a poet, writing mainly haiku, with a fountain pen. His work was delicate, considered, and beautiful. He wrote for the love of it, and published a handful of pieces, under pressure from friends to share his work with the world.
He always encouraged my writing, but until now, I have never had any confidence in it. I believe this collection of poetry is strong, and has power in it's honesty.
The photographs are a varied selection, taken in Dunedin, Glasgow & Lanzarote, where I spent a family holiday coming to terms with the news of his diagnosis.
I am releasing this as a way to mark the passing of time, since he passed away in November, a chapter of grief, exploration and as a way to show I have faith in myself and my words.
